my perspective

i think its better to have some background in photographic film even if you only shoot with digital. I do agree that film is slowly losing its edge in the photographic world, and digital is fast becoming a medium in which most photographers prefer to use.

BUT

learning film is learning digital. the basics of photography and its workflow are the same in both sets. ISO is still ISO, shutter speed is still shutter speed, and aperture is still aperture. film is terribly unforgiving and forces you to output your best and for you to pay attention to detail. wheh this transfers over to the digital realm, your eyes are tuned to find errors and how to fix them properly. even in the editing aspect, learning how to manually edit photos is also learning how to digitally edit them.

i am so glad i chose to take film vs. taking digital for my general photo class. its made me a 25-40% photographer because of it. ive learned so many tricks and tips that i can apply digitally.


if you are a avid photographer, i HIGHLY suggest you take at least 1 film class. it will help you.
